Coffee & Code: Mapping your Data

Coffee & Code: Mapping your Data In-Person

Details: This session will introduce participants to the basics of using geographic data to create a visualization (map) with Carto (aka CartoDB), a web-based mapping and analysis tool. Application of historical and modern day map layers will be explored. Feel free to bring your own data with coordinates/locations, otherwise we will use a shared dataset. We will use Map Warper to find a historical basemap.

This session may be of interest to participants who are interested in visualizing historical data for humanities or social science projects or classroom use. Session will run about 60 minutes, with 30 minutes afterwards for questions and discussion.

Instructor: Anna Kijas

Pre-requisite: Ability to use Google spreadsheets, and follow a template to modify CSS and other scripts. Please register for a free Carto account and a Map Warper account in advance of this session.

Note: This is a hands-on session. If possible, bring your own laptop.

If you need assistance in cleaning data for analysis or visualization, please contact Anna Kijas (anna.kijas@bc.edu), Digital Scholarship Librarian.
